Responsibilities of the position include (but are not limited to) preparation of textual and explanatory annotation, verification of manuscript transcriptions, and historical research of the private and professional papers and correspondence of Albert Einstein. The ability to work both independently and as a member of a collaborative team is essential.

The salary and initial appointment as Assistant Editor or Associate Editor may be made at the research staff, postdoctoral scholar, or research assistant professor level, dependent on the final candidate’s qualifications. Postdoctoral and research assistant professor candidates must have a PhD degree in history or a related field.  These are non-tenured, full-time, exempt, positions with benefits, though part-time employment may also be considered for staff positions

Preference would be given to candidates with expertise in the history and/or philosophy of 20th century physics or physical sciences, able to address Einstein’s scientific papers and correspondence for the period 1928-1932. Very good reading knowledge of written German is required. A Ph.D. degree in a pertinent field is strongly desired (history/philosophy of modern physics; physics; modern German history).

Training in the evaluation of primary material and experience in archival research is highly valued. Editorial experience is desired but not required. The candidate should be able to work productively and according to schedule in a collaborative environment; willing to acquire new skills, including the use of project-specific word-processing and database software; able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and with attention to detail and accuracy.

Salary is competitive and includes a comprehensive benefits package. The starting date, not earlier than 1 April 2019, is negotiable. Application review begins 15 January 2019, and will continue until the position is filled. Interested candidates should send curriculum vitae, a recent writing sample, and the names of three references familiar with the candidate’s work to: Search Committee, Einstein Papers Project, Caltech 20-7, Pasadena, CA 91125. Materials and inquiries may be sent electronically to [email protected].
