Job description

Salary: £47,263-£63,463 (plus medical insurance; College housing allowance £12,180 p.a or College accommodation; access to shared equity scheme (subject to eligibility/availability); £2,754 p.a. payable on award of Full Professor title)

Balliol College and the University of Oxford are seeking to recruit a Tutorial Fellow in Ancient Philosophy, with an Associate Professorship (or Professorship) in Ancient Philosophy, with effect from 1 September 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter. This is intended to be a permanent position and the successful candidate will be a member of the Governing Body and a Trustee of Balliol College. 

Pay will be on the Associate Professor salary scale £47,263-£63,463 p.a., and additional allowances (including a taxable and pensionable College housing allowance) are provided.

This is an open-rank position and is open to recently completed PhDs, or to those who will have submitted their dissertation for examination by the closing date, as well as to more senior scholars.

The appointee will be responsible for undertaking a range of research, teaching, and administrative duties as set out in the Job Description and Person Specification. The Area of Specialisation for the post is Ancient Philosophy, with a teaching competence in Ethics for undergraduates also required. The successful candidate will have a record of original, important, and rigorous published research in the field of Ancient Philosophy, or display evidence of potential to publish research of this quality; and must also have evidence of excellence, or of the potential for excellence, in undergraduate and graduate teaching and the ability to undertake pastoral responsibilities for both groups of students.
