Lecturer in Philosophy and Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies

The Department of Philosophy and the Humanities Collegiate Division at the University of Chicago are accepting applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible Lecturer, expected to start on 1 September 2019. The initial appointment is for one year, and is renewable upon successful review. In addition to the appointment as Lecturer, the successful candidate will be appointed as Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Philosophy and in that role will be working under the direction of the Faculty Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS). The regular annual teaching load will be a minimum of six courses in the Department of Philosophy's undergraduate program and the College's Humanities Core, reduced to a minimum of four while serving as Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies.

As Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies, the successful applicant will advise students on choice of track, course selection, program policy issues, study abroad as well as grant/fellowship opportunities; enroll new majors and minors and track their progress through the program; liaise with College Advising regarding the academic progress of majors/minors; aid majors in identifying appropriate Faculty advisors for BA theses and research projects; coordinate dossiers required for BA Honors applications and oversee undergraduate awards; advise students on internships, post-graduate employment, and graduate school applications; plan and organize, in collaboration with the DUS, the department's co-curricular events; engage in outreach activities to promote the Philosophy major and minor; assist the DUS in the evaluation of the undergraduate curriculum and in the development of new curricular initiatives; maintain, update, and enhance the undergraduate section of the departmental website; aid the DUS in preparing the annual report on the undergraduate program; and work with the Departmental Administrator on alumni outreach. The Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies may also be asked to supervise BA theses of Philosophy majors in the Intensive Track.

All requirements for the doctoral degree in Philosophy or a related field must be completed by the start of the appointment. A strong record of undergraduate teaching at the college or post-secondary level is required. Experience in administration and student advising desirable.
