Job description

Assistant Director of The Bioethics Program

The Bioethics Program at The Pennsylvania State University seeks applicants for Assistant Director. The position is a full-time, non-tenure line appointment, starting on or before August, 2019. Penn State's Bioethics Program offers a novel dual-title Ph.D. program that enables students to combine bioethics with another discipline in their dissertation, as well as coursework. The program also offers doctoral, master's, and undergraduate minors in bioethics. Our students explore bioethics broadly construed to include public health ethics, food ethics, and environmental ethics. Our faculty and students also participate in activities of the Rock Ethics Institute. The successful candidate will work closely with the program director. Responsibilities will include building new collaborations with other departments; reconfiguring existing degree programs and courses, and exploring new degrees; advising undergraduates; planning and coordinating bioethics events; participating in grant writing and collaborative research; and overseeing the public face of the program, including its website and social media. Teaching responsibilities will be one course per semester, along with facilitating and attending the weekly bioethics colloquium. Candidates for the position should hold a doctoral or professional degree in a field related to bioethics. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor, and is expected to maintain an active research profile in bioethics. The initial appointment is for three years with annual review of performance and the opportunity for renewal by mutual agreement. How to Apply: Candidates should submit an online application and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to Fergie Macedo at [email protected]. A complete application will include: a cover letter explaining how the applicant's background and experience qualifies them for the position; a curriculum vitae; a scholarly paper (not to exceed 10,000 words); and three letters of recommendation. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
