Assistant Professor - Science and Technology Studies - 1903475  Job Field: Tenure Stream  Faculty / Division: Faculty of Arts and Science  Department: Institute for History & Philosophy of Science & Technology  Campus: St. George (downtown Toronto)  Job Posting: Aug 22, 2019  Job Closing: Oct 30, 2019, 11:59pm EST  Description:

The Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (IHPST) in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream appointment in the area of Science and Technology Studies (STS). The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor and is expected to commence on July 1, 2020.

Candidates must hold a PhD in Science and Technology Studies, Philosophy of Science and/or Technology, History of Science and/or Technology and/or Medicine, or a closely related discipline, by the date of appointment or shortly thereafter, and have a research profile in the societal or ethical impact of emerging technologies of (i) computer, information, artificial intelligence, or data science; (ii) biomedicine or biomedical science; or (iii) the impact of technology on the environment and society.  We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing departmental strengths.

Candidates must demonstrate excellence in, and commitment to, both research and teaching in science and technology studies and/or the history or philosophy of science, technology, and/or medicine.

Excellence in research must be demonstrated by a record of publications or forthcoming publications in top-ranked field relevant journals or other leading venues, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements by referees of high international standing. The successful candidate will be expected to mount an innovative, competitive and externally supported research program.

Teaching excellence must be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, letters of reference, a statement of teaching philosophy, and a teaching dossier (containing sample course materials and teaching evaluations). The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the IHPST’s research-intensive graduate programs and its undergraduate programs in science and society and history and philosophy of science by, for instance, teaching undergraduate courses on the introduction to STS; graduate courses on STS theory and methods; and by developing courses related to the candidate’s own research expertise. In addition, the successful candidate will have the demonstrated ability to teach some of the Institute’s existing courses, such as Science and Values or the proseminar Introduction to History and Philosophy of Science.

The IHPST forges intellectual and pedagogical connections between the humanities and STEM disciplines. We anticipate that the successful candidate will be involved in collaborative initiatives in research and teaching with other cognate departments depending upon their area(s) of expertise. We also anticipate that the successful candidate will be involved in the new Schwartz-Reisman Institute for Technology and Society.

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
