Job description

The Department of Philosophy and the Program in Disability Studies at Georgetown University invite applications for a joint tenure-track, junior-level position in bioethics and disability studies (broadly construed).

A Ph.D. in Philosophy or a relevant cognate field is required before the start date. This is an interdisciplinary position, but the candidate’s training and professional background must be consistent with having their tenure home and primary teaching responsibilities in the Philosophy Department. Candidates should have a track record of research at the interface between philosophy and disability studies, with a specialization in bioethics, taken in the broadest sense, which may include or overlap with critical race theory, environmental ethics, philosophy of science, queer theory, or feminist ethics, for instance.

The presumptive teaching load is two courses per semester, including a mix of graduate and undergraduate classes. At least two courses per year are expected to be core or elective courses in the Disability Studies program. At least one course per year should contribute to the Bioethics minor.

In addition to pursuing a creative and dynamic research program, candidates will be responsible for supervising PhD students in Philosophy, helping to build the Disability Studies program, and performing service to the Philosophy Department, the Disability Studies Program, and the University.

Suitable candidates may be affiliated with the Kennedy Institute of Ethics, which is an ethics research institute at Georgetown University with an historical focus on bioethics. The institute is committed to public ethics and to building ties with the larger Washington, DC community, including with policy makers. Candidates with an interest in such public work are especially encouraged to apply.

The Department of Philosophy is a large, intellectually pluralist department. It has a vibrant PhD program, plays an essential role in the undergraduate general education curriculum, and strives to be as inclusive as possible. The Disability Studies Program at Georgetown is a relatively new, growing, interdisciplinary program that recently launched a successful minor. The interdisciplinary program plays a key role in building and supporting the disability community and hosts public speakers and events in Disability Studies.

We are committed to building a diverse intellectual community and strongly encourage applications from those from underrepresented backgrounds. The search committee will not discriminate on the basis of race, gender identity, disability, national origin, sexual orientation, religion, age, or any other demographic identity. We are committed to working with candidates to meet their access needs. We are also committed to making sure that all events concerning this search are as broadly accessible to participants as possible.
