Job description |
The Department of Philosophy wishes to appoint to an open-ended lectureship (equivalent to an Assistant Professor in North American terms) in Political Philosophy (where this is construed broadly to include possible specialisms in feminism, philosophy of race and applied ethics). This is an ideal opportunity for a scholar with outstanding research potential and excellent teaching ability to join one of the leading philosophy departments in the United Kingdom. The postholder will contribute to the Department’s outstanding research profile through the production of high-quality research; it would be an advantage if that research had potential for Impact beyond the academic community. Their specialist research area will be in Political Philosophy broadly construed. They will have a standard teaching load that will require competence to design and deliver modules in Political Philosophy at multiple undergraduate levels, to contribute to postgraduate teaching (modules and supervision) on our Philosophy and Political Theory MAs, and to supervise at PhD level. An ability to teach non-Western philosophy would be an advantage. We also welcome applicants who work in the history of philosophy. The successful applicant will also contribute to the Department’s presence across the University, in particular its Faculty of Arts and Humanities, and, through outreach and knowledge exchange activities, in the local community and beyond. The Department of Philosophy currently consists of 18 permanent members of staff, across an unusually broad range of areas. We have a thriving research culture, and in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework our publications were ranked 2nd in the UK. Each year the Department hosts a wide range of conferences, workshops, reading groups and seminars. In addition, we have been home to a variety of large research projects, including the Leverhulme Bias and Blame Project, the Leverhulme Pragmatism and Idealism Network, and the AHRC Culture and Mind Project. We are also home to the Hang Seng Centre for Cognitive Science, the Centre for Engaged Philosophy and (alongside York and Leeds) the White Rose Centre for the History of Philosophy. We have a large and vibrant postgraduate community. Our operations are underpinned by a team of 5 administrative staff within the department. The department offers BAs in Single Honours Philosophy, Philosophy, Religion and Ethics and twelve dual honours degrees, including Politics and Philosophy, Economics and Philosophy and History and Philosophy. We have an MA in Philosophy and interdisciplinary MAs in Political Theory and in Cognitive Studies. Our MA in Political Theory is taught alongside the Politics Department: see http://www.shef.ac.uk/philosophy/politicaltheory. We have home and international PhD students across a wide range of areas of the subject and with a range of different funding sources. Our website offers more information about all aspects of the department’s activity: www.sheffield.ac.uk/philosophy Following the closing date, we will contact you by email by 31 December 2019 to let you know whether or not you have been shortlisted to participate in the next stage of the selection process. It is anticipated that this next stage will be scheduled during the last 2 weeks in January 2020 |
