The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor of Philosophy to begin in August of 2020. AOS: open. AOC: the philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas, the Catholic philosophical tradition, the history of Western philosophy, virtue ethics. Teaching load: 21 credit hours per academic year in a 9-3-9 Fall-Winter-Spring schedule. The qualified applicant is a generalist who holds a doctoral degree in philosophy or is ABD but will have defended prior to the Fall of 2020, has a thorough grounding in the history of philosophy, stands within and can articulate well the philosophia perennis of the Catholic intellectual tradition, and provides evidence of quality teaching experience. The candidate must possess a strong commitment to a liberal education and undergraduate teaching. The successful candidate will teach regularly in the university's core curriculum, and teach a range of courses, including logic, Western philosophy, philosophical anthropology, and ethics. The position offers opportunities for creatively designing upper-division courses that attract students to further study of philosophy. The candidate will also advise and mentor majors and minors, and supervise capstone theses. While excellence as an educator is the top priority, the successful candidate will also engage in scholarship and service, and participate in department meetings and campus committee work, especially collaborating with Campus Ministry. In addition candidates should possess the potential and desire to assume some administrative departmental duties. These duties include overseeing program adjuncts, course scheduling and development, assessing program offerings, and promoting the program within the university and the larger community. Successful candidates must also demonstrate a willingness to support and advance Mount Mercy’s mission as a Catholic university as outlined in Ex Corde Ecclesiae, providing student-focused education in the spirit of Catherine McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy, the religious order that founded the university. This position also requires significant fluency in, explanation of, and active advocacy for the Catholic intellectual and philosophical tradition in the MMU campus community. Strong preference will be given to applicants who are practicing Catholics willing to make a profession of faith according to Can. 833.7, and to collaborate with the local Church in joint programming. Mount Mercy University is a Catholic, coeducational University founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1928 enrolling approximately 1800 students. The University offers a variety of liberal arts, professional, accelerated, and graduate degree programs.
