Job description

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Birmingham invites applications for a position of a permanent Senior Lecturer in Philosophy of Religion.  The new Senior Lecturer will join an internationally well-regarded philosophy department and also the Birmingham Centre for Philosophy of Religion. They will also be able to co-operate with the staff at the Department of Theology and Religion.

The Senior Lecturer is expected to:

  • Make a significant, world-leading contribution to research in philosophy of religion through publications in highly regarded venues.
  • Successfully solicit significant research grants
  • Supervision and examine PhD students
  • Teach modules in philosophy of religion at different levels and also take part in the development of teaching and learning at the Department and School
  • Contribute to the administration and management of both teaching and research, including to the management of the Templeton-funded Global Philosophy of Religion Project which will commence in September 2020.

The Senior Lecturer will have:

  • A higher degree relevant to the research/teaching area (usually PhD) or equivalent qualifications
  • An international reputation in research through significant original publications
  • A record of substantial and sustained research income generation, e.g. through research grants, contracts, research consultancy or other external funding
  • Experience in teaching philosophy of religion in the Higher Education context successfully and willingness to develop teaching methods and new modules and programmes
  • A past record of carrying out management and administration-related activities successfully and effectively.

The Department of Philosophy at Birmingham has 20 permanent members of staff. It is a friendly and vibrant department, which excels in both research and teaching. The Department belongs to the School of Philosophy, Theology and Religion, where philosophy of religion is one of the important research strengths and also attractions for students at all levels. The School hosts the Birmingham Centre of Philosophy of Religion and also the the Templeton-funded Global Philosophy of Religion Project which will commence in September 2020 led by Professor Yujin Nagasawa. Because of this, the Department will provide an excellent research and teaching environment for the new appointment.
