Job description

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Tartu is seeking expressions of interest from candidates who would like to join the department for a period of up to two years as a visiting lecturer. We have two positions available for the period 01.09.2020-31.08.2022. But this period is negotiable, apart from the end date. In principle, one-year positions are possible as well.

We prefer candidates who work in one or more of the following areas of philosophy (in no order of preference): the philosophy and ethics of AI, epistemology, philosophy of language, philosophy of mind.

We expect the candidates to have sufficient previous teaching experience, a PhD degree, and a track record of high quality publications. They should be motivated to collaborate with other members of the department in their research. We particularly welcome candidates who are keen to pursue interdisciplinary research, who foster a growth mindset through their teaching, and who have an interest in sharing and exploring approaches to teaching with their colleagues. The exact teaching load will be negotiated.

COVID-19: If the pandemic continues to force travel restrictions at and beyond the start-date then arrangements for distance teaching and collaborative research will be adopted. Candidates with questions about such arrangements are encouraged to get in touch with the head of department Bruno Mölder ([email protected]).

The candidate is required to be a citizen of a country other than Estonia, and to not have been an academic employee in Estonia for more than 10 months in total after 30.10.2010.

Expressions of interest must include: (1) a letter of motivation, (2) curriculum vitae and list of publications, (3) writing sample, (4) teaching portfolio (including a list of courses candidates have taught and are willing to teach, as well as their supervising experience), (5) names and contact details of three referees, including at least one referee who can comment on teaching.

The deadline for expressions of interest (submitted via email to [email protected]) is April 27, 2020.

Details on the Department of Philosophy can be found on the Department's webpage.https://www.flfi.ut.ee/en/department-philosophy

The position is financed by the University of Tartu ASTRA Project PER ASPERA (European Regional Development Fund).
