Job description |
The Department of History and Philosophy of Science and Medicine at Indiana University announces one one-year Post-doc position beginning August 15, 2020, funded by the National Science Foundation. The AOS for the position is philosophy of science, with a preference for philosophy of climate science or philosophy of statistics or methodology. The Area of Competence is open, but some familiarity with big data or data science is desirable. More specifically, the ability to analyze, understand, and communicate about big data applications or statistical models is helpful for the position. The post-doc will be funded to work next summer for one month with the Principle Investigator (PI) on the grant, Prof. Elisabeth Lloyd, in Boulder, Colorado, at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, disease conditions permitting, with climate modelers, on specific projects involved in establishing and understanding methodological, philosophical, and social issues in big data in climate science and modeling. Duties include cooperative research with climate scientists and the PI with the aim of publication, and a teaching load of one semester-long undergraduate course during the academic year. The PI will be available for advice and training regarding undergraduate teaching. Competence at communicating with climate scientists can be acquired during the project. The appointee will be expected to carry out a research program in related fields for the duration of the Post-doc. Some assistance with the supervision of graduate students will be involved. Full participation in departmental life, programs, colloquia, and special programs will be expected.
