Job description

Phillips Academy seeks a full-time, continuing Instructor in Philosophy and Religious Studies to begin in September of 2021.  Candidates must be prepared to teach a wide range of courses in both philosophy and religious studies. Teaching responsibilities will include three or four electives per ten-week trimester at the introductory and upper levels (serving grades 10-12).  Prospective candidates are encouraged to review Phillips Academy’s Course of Study for a sense of the department’s curriculum: https://www.andover.edu/files/COS2019-2020.pdf

The teaching content of our current curriculum means that while AOCs are open, we particularly welcome applications from individuals with areas of competence in the following areas: ethics (including non-Western ethics), applied ethics (including ethics of technology), feminist philosophy, philosophy of race, political philosophy, philosophies of religion (in areas other than Christianity and Buddhism), as well as other non-Western philosophies.

Candidates must also be committed to cultivating equitable learning experiences for all students and be eager and willing to collaborate with departmental faculty on both teaching and student learning.  We seek dynamic teachers who will be active participants not only in the academic program but also in the athletics/fitness and residential programs at this boarding school.  Master’s degree plus a minimum of three years’ teaching experience preferred.

As a boarding school, Phillips Academy asks its faculty to be available for students beyond the usual time commitments of a high school or college. As such, on-campus housing is provided free of charge for all residential faculty. Over the course of a career at Andover, faculty should expect to spend at least 8-10 years in a dorm, working as a residential and academic advisor to a group of students. Faculty are also asked to participate in the school’s athletics program for two seasons each year.

Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.  Please visit our application portal to submit a cover letter (addressed to Mr. Jeffrey C. Domina, Dean of Faculty, Phillips Academy), résumé, and two letters of reference.  Please do not send materials directly by mail or e-mail.

Phillips Academy is an intentionally diverse and inclusive residential community.  In your cover letter, please address directly your experience and interest in working in such a school community.  We welcome applications from individuals who identify with groups typically underrepresented in independent school settings.

Phillips Academy is an equal opportunity employer.  Any offer of employment will be contingent upon successful CORI/SORI and fingerprinting background checks, as well as authorization to work in the United States.
