Job description

The Philosophy Department is seeking a tenure track associate professor specializing in Africana Philosophy as part of an Africana Studies hiring cluster.  The successful candidate will start August 16, 2022 and join faculty in the departments of English, History, Global Languages and Cultures, and Religious Studies whose research and teaching focus on Africana Studies. In addition to research and teaching, the successful candidate will develop new courses for the Africana Studies minor, and help shape the new major. This person will have an affiliation with the Race and Ethnic Studies program and may also contribute to other interdisciplinary programs. For more information about our cohort hires, please visit

The successful candidate will teach Introduction to Philosophy, as well as Africana Philosophy and other courses according to their interests and expertise as well as department needs.  The typical teaching load is six undergraduate courses per academic year (three per semester).  Some summer teaching may be available.  We also expect ongoing publication, and faculty research is encouraged and supported (e.g. summer research grants, travel support).  Further responsibilities include service to the department, University, and academic community as well as collaborative engagement with colleagues.  

We are a large, collegial and  collaborative Philosophy Department, currently numbering fifteen tenure-line faculty and nine full-time non-tenure-track faculty, and offering strong major and minor programs.  Minimum qualifications:

    PhD in Philosophy or PhD in a closely related field with at least 18 graduate credit hours of philosophical study

Successful record of service to a department, university or the broader academic community.

    Peer reviewed publications in Africana Philosophy Successful teaching experience in Philosophy as instructor of record at the college or university level  Effective written communication skills
