The Philosophy Department is seeking an assistant professor specializing in Medieval
Philosophy, with a focus on the interplay among Christian, Jewish, and Islamic traditions,
as part of a Middle Eastern Studies hiring cluster. This position will start August 16,
2022 and join faculty in the departments of History, Global Languages and Cultures, and
Religious Studies whose research and teaching focus on Middle Eastern Studies. In
addition to research and teaching, the successful candidate will develop new Philosophy
courses for the Middle Eastern Studies minor and the Common Academic Program. This
position will also have the opportunity to work with a dynamic International Studies
program and the College’s diverse range of other public-facing centers to help further

The successful candidate will teach Introduction to Philosophy, as well as Medieval
Philosophy and other courses according to their interests and expertise as well as
department needs. They will also teach a yearly graduate course in the Religious
Studies department, on the Philosophical dimensions of Medieval Theology, and may
participate in the Religious Studies doctoral program in additional ways as desired and
needed. The typical teaching load is six courses per academic year (three per
semester). Some summer teaching may be available. We also expect ongoing
publication, and faculty research is encouraged and supported (e.g. summer research
grants, travel support). Further responsibilities include service to the department,
university, and academic community as well as collaborative engagement with
colleagues.
We are a large, collegial, and collaborative Philosophy Department, currently numbering
fifteen tenure-line faculty and nine full-time non-tenure-track faculty, and offering strong

Minimum qualifications:
PhD in philosophy or a closely related field (with at least 18 graduate credit hours
of philosophical study)
Publication record in medieval philosophy
Teaching experience at the college or university level
Ability to teach graduate course in the philosophical dimensions of medieval
theology
Effective written communication skills

Ability to connect philosophy, including medieval philosophy, with diversity and
social justice concerns
Peer reviewed publications in medieval philosophy

maintain student engagement
developing courses and programming in medieval philosophy
working with and teaching socially and culturally diverse communities
