The Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a professorial stream tenure-track appointment in Africana Philosophy at the Assistant level, to commence July 1, 2023. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

A PhD in Philosophy or a related field is required by July 1, 2023, with a demonstrated record of excellence or promise of excellence for junior appointment in research and in teaching. Applicants should have a clearly articulated program of research specializing in Africana Philosophy, broadly construed, including both ancient and contemporary philosophy from Continental Africa and the African Diaspora: including but not limited to African-American and Afro-Caribbean Philosophy. This research program will build on our existing broad commitment to intellectual diversity, while adding to our existing research and teaching strength in non-canonical philosophical traditions, including Feminist, Continental, African, African-American, Chinese, and Indian Philosophy

The successful candidate will be expected to engage in outstanding, innovative, and, as appropriate, externally funded research at the highest level.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence or promise of research excellence for junior appointment. Materials used to assess excellence or promise of excellence include: the research statement; a record of publications or late-round revisions in appropriate venues in the field; presentations at major conferences; awards and accolades; successful grant proposals; public impact (e.g. policy contributions, published op-eds, public lectures, etc.). After the long list stage, letters of recommendation and interviews will also be used to indicate excellence or promise of excellence. The Philosophy Department is committed to supporting and mentoring the research programs of its junior faculty.

The position will involve graduate teaching and supervision, as well as undergraduate teaching and the successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. While the successful candidate must be able to teach Africana Philosophy at both the undergraduate and graduate level, it would also be advantageous for candidates to have teaching competence in introductory non-western Philosophy, Islamic Philosophy, and/or the Philosophy of Race, as well as service teaching needs in Modes of Reasoning.

Evidence of excellence or promise of excellence for junior appointment in teaching will be provided through: the teaching statement and cover letter; sample syllabi; teaching experience; teaching awards; pedagogical innovations such as experiential education; opportunities and engagement with students outside the classroom; or the use of technology to enhance learning.

The successful candidate will also give evidence of their ability to provide service to the Department of Philosophy. Evidence can include experience running speaker series, workshops, student clubs, or other departmental activities, or administrative experience. The successful candidate will demonstrate their commitment to the academic and community life of the department, including the needs of our diverse student body and our departmental commitment to philosophical inquiry, broadly construed, in diverse intellectual traditions.
