Job description

The Department of Philosophy invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to commence July 1, 2017  


Area of specialization
: Philosophy of Mind/Language

Areas of competence: Open, but must be able to teach at least one of the following: political philosophy; philosophy of law; ancient philosophy; environmental philosophy; or feminist philosophy.

McMaster University is a research intensive university, and the Department of Philosophy has undergraduate philosophy degree programs (Honours, Combined Honours, B.A.), an M.A. program, and a Ph.D. program. In addition, the Department is home to a new Honours Degree Program in Justice, Political Philosophy and Law. The aims of this program are to foster a sophisticated understanding of the law and legal institutions that make up the social world in which we live and of the political and moral theories that address the value and justice of these institutions.  

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. by the time of the appointment and demonstrated excellence in teaching and research. Duties will include undergraduate and graduate teaching, the supervision of master's and doctoral theses, and committee responsibilities. The normal teaching load in the Philosophy Department is two courses in each term, plus graduate supervision.
