Job description

Hampshire College, an independent, innovative liberal arts institution and member of the Five College consortium, is accepting applications for an assistant professor of applied ethics, appointment beginning July 1, 2017. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in philosophy in hand by the time of appointment.

We seek candidates with broad teaching competence in applied ethics, and with research specialization in one or more areas of applied ethics, such as but not limited to environmental ethics, including food and agriculture ethics, technology ethics, medical ethics, or ethics of global resources and interventions. Faculty responsibilities include instruction of four courses per year, work with students on independent projects, and advising. We are searching for applicants who are able to combine engaged teaching with creative inquiry within the context of an experimental, rigorous liberal arts education. Candidates with interest in and a commitment to community engaged learning are particularly encouraged to apply. This position is endowed in affiliation with our Ethics and the Common Good Program. We are therefore particularly interested in candidates who are willing to actively contribute to and help further develop the Ethics and the Common Good Program, and serve on its advisory committee. Candidates whose work is interdisciplinary and involves or intersects with work in the social, cognitive or natural sciences, the arts or humanities, or experimental philosophy approaches to ethics are also encouraged to apply.

Hampshire is committed to building a culturally diverse intellectual community and strongly encourages applications from women and minority candidates.
