Job description |
Amherst College invites applications for a full-time three-year appointment at the rank of visiting assistant or associate professor in U.S. education studies. Within the last decade, Amherst College has profoundly transformed its student body in terms of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and nationality, among other areas. Today, nearly one-quarter of Amherst’s students are Pell grant recipients; forty-four percent of our students are domestic students of color. Our expectation is that the successful candidate will excel at teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion. This position is open to scholars who work in any liberal arts discipline. We encourage applications from candidates interested in all areas of U.S. education but require knowledge of K-12 U.S. schooling. We favor a broadly conceived approach to the social, cultural, and/or political dimensions of education studies. We particularly seek candidates with a vision and interest in thinking about how an education studies program might complement and enhance Amherst’s existing liberal arts curriculum. A strong research agenda and a commitment to undergraduate teaching in a liberal arts setting with a diverse student population are essential. In addition to advancing an active research agenda, the successful candidate will teach two courses each semester, will collaborate with existing faculty to develop foundational courses in education studies; and may direct senior honors theses. Applicants should hold an advanced degree by the time of appointment. To apply, please submit electronically to https://apply.interfolio.com/39260 a letter of application, CV, syllabi for a course relevant to education studies, one writing sample not to exceed thirty pages, and three confidential letters of recommendation. Review of applications will begin January 5, 2017, and continue until the position is filled. Amherst College is an equal opportunity employer and encourages women, persons of color, and persons with disabilities to apply. The college is committed to enriching its educational experience and its culture through the diversity of its faculty, administration, and staff. |
