Job description

Job Description: Founding Director of the Center for Interdisciplinarity

Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI. The College of Arts & Letters (CAL) invites applications for a Director of the Center for Interdisciplinarity.  This will be a full time, academic year position housed in CAL. This position will be at the level of full professor with tenure in the Department of Philosophy in CAL.  AOS and AOC: Open. The MSU Center for Interdisciplinarity (hereafter, "the Center") will launch in fall of 2017 under the leadership of the successful candidate and will involve an Associate Director, an academic specialist, administrative support, and affiliated faculty from philosophy, CAL, and across campus.  The Center will pursue three initial objectives: (a) produce leading edge philosophical research in interdisciplinarity, (b) facilitate the development of a funding culture in the arts and humanities, and (c) foster interdisciplinary graduate education. (Please visit the Center website for more detailed information: http://www.cal.msu.edu/msuci.) The Center Director will report to the Dean of CAL, and will combine administrative leadership of the Center with a continued pursuit of an interdisciplinary program of philosophical research. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in philosophy or in an allied field. Applications are encouraged from philosophers who actively conduct research in an interdisciplinary area of philosophy or in the philosophy of interdisciplinarity. The successful candidate will have a compelling vision for the development of the Center, experience in acquiring external research funding, a world-class record of publications in interdisciplinary philosophy or the philosophy of interdisciplinarity, and administrative experience. The philosophy of interdisciplinarity complements current department-level emphases in environmental philosophy, philosophy of science, social and political philosophy, and philosophy of healthcare. The department houses the interdisciplinary Toolbox Dialogue Initiative, and it is also affiliated with interdisciplinary programs in ethics and policy in food and agriculture, peace and justice studies, gender in a global context, African American and African studies, and ethics and humanities in the life sciences. Additional information about the department is available on its website (http://www.philosophy.msu.edu/). Teaching will not be required, although opportunities will exist for the successful candidate. Preferred starting date: August 16, 2017. Salary and benefits are competitive.
