Associate Professor - Philosophy

University of Massachusetts Lowell

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Massachusetts Lowell seeks applications for an Associate Professor position.

The Philosophy Department currently consists of eight full-time faculty members. We offer a B.A. degree in philosophy with optional concentrations in both Communications and Religious Studies. Faculty have the opportunity to engage with a range of interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate degree programs. UMass Lowell is a public national research university with 17,000 students; it is ranked as a top-tier national university by U.S. News and World Report.

Area of research specialization is open, although applications from candidates with research and teaching expertise related to Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy, History of Philosophy, Philosophy of Religion, Public Philosophy, or Non-Western Philosophies, and who can contribute to interdisciplinary research efforts at the University, are strongly encouraged. The standard teaching load is 3/3 but faculty who meet university standards for research productivity are eligible for a 2/2 load. Service to the Department and University is expected as well.

Applicants should provide CV, cover letter, writing sample, evidence of effective teaching, and names and contact information of three references. Candidates should describe past experience with and future interest in leadership roles at the professional, University, and Departmental levels, and should describe how their research and teaching strengths complement the current strengths of the Department.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Ph.D. in Philosophy or related discipline (must have Ph.D. at the time of application)
  • Track record of successful scholarly publication and engagement with the field
  • Undergraduate teaching experience in core areas that are aligned with the needs of the Department
  • The ability to work effectively with diverse groups
