Job description

Lingnan University has one of the very best Philosophy departments in Asia, especially with regard to research in Western philosophy.  It excels in aesthetics and philosophy of science, and has considerable strength in other core areas of analytic philosophy such as epistemology, metaphysics, and ethics.  Department members publish in leading journals in the field, such as Analysis, Australasian Journal of Philosophy, British Journal for the Philosophy of Science, Ethics, Journal of Philosophical Logic, Mind, Noûs, Philosophers’ Imprint, Philosophical Quarterly, Philosophical Studies, Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, and Philosophy of Science.

General Requirements

Area of Specialization: Open

Areas of Competence: Ethics or Logic/Critical Thinking

PhD in Philosophy, or in a cognate area such as History and Philosophy of Science

Publications in Philosophy, preferably in leading journals

Teaching experience in Philosophy, at university level or equivalent

The successful applicant will produce internationally excellent research in his/her area of expertise, and obtain competitively awarded research grants to support this work.  He/she will also teach core courses for non-philosophy majors (presently Logic and Critical Thinking and Understanding Morality) as well as upper-level philosophy courses in his/her area of specialization.  The teaching load will normally be five courses per year (with English as the language of instruction).  This load may be reduced under various circumstances, e.g. on receipt of external research funding or due to graduate supervision.


Appointment

The conditions of appointment will be competitive and remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Minimum basic salary is approximately 700,000 HKD per annum on the current salary scale (which is equivalent to around 70,000 GBP, 85,000 EUR, 90,000 USD p.a. at the time of writing).  Salaries tax rate in Hong Kong is presently no higher than 15%.  Fringe benefits include annual leave, medical and dental benefits, mandatory provident fund, gratuity (payable on completion of every two years of service) and housing allowance for eligible appointee. Incoming passage and baggage allowance is also provided for overseas appointee.

Appointment will normally be made on an initial contract of three years, which, subject to review and mutual agreement, may lead to longer-term appointment with possibility of tenure after six years.
