Job description

The Roger Mudd Center for Ethics welcomes applications for the 2017-2019 Mudd Center for Ethics Postdoctoral Fellowship.  The successful candidate will be someone with normative research interests in moral or political philosophy, and whose work is relevant to ethical issues arising in public or professional life.  Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Philosophy, Political Theory, or a related normative field.  Postdoctoral fellows will be expected to teach three undergraduate courses during the year, typically including a 100-level course in the fall, an upper-division course in the winter, and a third course in the fall, winter, or spring (chosen in consultation with the Director).  We are currently in the process of developing and proposing a new undergraduate Minor in Ethics in Public and Professional Life, to which the postdoctoral fellow’s teaching would be expected to contribute.  In addition, the Mudd Ethics Fellow will be expected to participate actively in Mudd Center activities and event planning, to interact with and advise undergraduates affiliated with the Mudd Center, and to help foster an interdisciplinary ethics community across the College of Liberal Arts, the Williams School of Commerce, Economics, and Politics, and the School of Law.  The successful candidate will be someone who has completed his or her Ph.D. by June of 2017, and who is no more than three years from the awarding of his or her degree (i.e., June of 2014) (though exceptions to this rule may be made in unusual circumstances).  The appointment will be for two years, beginning on July 1, 2017 and ending on June 30, 2019.

Washington and Lee is a private, liberal arts university with approximately 2200 students, nestled in the Shenandoah Valley in Lexington, Virginia.  One of the nation’s top liberal arts colleges, W&L is unique in having accredited programs in business administration, journalism, and accounting, plus a graduate School of Law.  Established in 1749, it is the ninth oldest institution of higher learning in the nation.  The Roger Mudd Center for Ethics was established in 2010 through a gift to the University from award-winning journalist Roger Mudd, a 1950 graduate of Washington and Lee.  Its mission is to advance dialogue, teaching, and research about important ethical issues in public and professional life.  To learn more, please visit https://www.wlu.edu/mudd-center.

Please submit a cover letter, CV, a writing sample (no more than 25 pages), three letters of recommendation, a one-page research statement, and a teaching portfolio.  Applications will be collected at the following web address: http://jobs.wlu.edu/postings/2233. To ensure full consideration, please submit all materials by February 17, 2017. Questions should be directed to Angela Smith, Roger Mudd Professor of Ethics and Director of the Roger Mudd Center for Ethics at [email protected].

Diversity is a core value of a liberal arts education and an enrichment to our community.  Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.  W&L is an equal opportunity employer.
