DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY Applications are sought for a postdoctoral scholar to work on the “Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Law in New Zealand Project” funded by the New Zealand Law Foundation. This interdisciplinary project is a collaboration between the Faculty of Law and the Departments of Computer Science and Philosophy at the University of Otago. The Role The purpose of the Postdoctoral Fellowship will be to contribute to a three-year multi-disciplinary research project evaluating legal and policy implications of AI for New Zealand. In particular, questions regarding challenges posed by predictive AI technologies in the criminal justice system, for instance in policing and sentencing. You will: • Develop an extensive literature review; • Consult with international experts, in part through multi-disciplinary workshops; • Examine relevant practice in other jurisdictions, in particular the USA; and • Interview stakeholders with a view to informing discussion of policy options for New Zealand. Your skills and experience • At least a bachelor’s degree in law and a doctorate in law or some other discipline relevant to the project. • Preferably, also have familiarity with qualitative research methods, and an interest in AI and its social implications. Further details You will be responsible to the Principal Investigators on the project (Assoc. Professors Colin Gavaghan, Alistair Knott, and James Maclaurin) and under the overall direction of the Head of Philosophy, Professor Michael LeBuffe. This is a full-time, fixed term position for two years. |
