Job description

University of Wyoming

Assistant Professor in Philosophy, Tenure Track

AOS: Metaphysics and Philosophy of Religion

AOC: Philosophy of Language, Epistemology

The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at the University of Wyoming is looking to hire an Assistant Professor (TT) with specializations in analytic metaphysics and in the philosophy of religion, and with competence in the philosophy of language and in epistemology. Minimum qualification is a PhD in philosophy by August 2018. Our department is the result of a recent merger of Philosophy and Religious Studies. While the two majors remain separate, we intend to find a new faculty member who, in addition to filling philosophy’s needs in metaphysics, can also serve as a bridge to religious studies, which has currently six full-time members. We have also been asked to develop a new Master’s Program in philosophy and religious studies, and the new faculty member will play an important role in this effort. In addition, the ideal candidate should be interested in and qualified to contribute to our attempts to forge a closer cooperation with the Department of Computer Science, both in developing a new minor in Computational Epistemology and in contributing to research on ontologies.

Candidates must provide evidence of excellence in research as demonstrated by publications in highly-ranked journals or forthcoming publications, presentations at significant conferences, and letters of reference. The successful candidate will be expected to start an active research program.

The successful candidate must be able to teach a wide range of courses in philosophy from the introductory to advanced levels, at both the undergraduate and, eventually, graduate levels. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through the statement of teaching philosophy, teaching evaluations, and the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application. At least one letter of reference should address the candidate’s teaching. The standard teaching load is five courses/year, with the possibility of reduced teaching in cases of extraordinary research productivity. Summer teaching is available. Salary is competitive.

In order to ensure full consideration, please submit the following materials in electronic form (pdf-files) by Nov. 1, 2017, to the head of the search committee, Franz-Peter Griesmaier, [email protected], and to Clayleen Rivord, [email protected].

1. Letter of Application

2. Current CV

3. Research Portfolio (writing sample, outline of current and future research projects)

4. Teaching Portfolio (teaching statement, teaching evaluations, sample course materials, two syllabi for junior/senior level courses: one in metaphysics, one in the philosophy of religion)

5. Transcripts (can at first be unofficial)

6. Arrange for at least three current, confidential letters of recommendation, signed and on letterhead, to be sent in support of your application (using interfolio is acceptable)

We will interview short-listed applicants for this position via Skype in early January, 2018, and then extend two or three invitations for on-campus interviews, to take place in February of 2018.

IMPORTANT: To be eligible for consideration, candidates must also apply through the job posting site of the Human Resources Department at the University of Wyoming, submitting the letter of application and the current CV:
