Postdoctoral Fellowship Program Announcement from the Philosophy Department at the University of Minnesota

The Philosophy Department at the University of Minnesota would like to invite applications for a new program on our Twin Cities Campus: the President's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program (https://faculty.umn.edu/presidents-postdoctoral-fellowship-program).  These fellowships are directed at “applicants whose research, teaching, and service will contribute to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity in higher education and at the University of Minnesota. The President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program is interested in scholars with the potential to bring to their research and teaching the perspective that comes from their educational background or understanding of the experiences of groups historically underrepresented in higher education.”

To apply, please complete an online application prior to Tuesday, November 1st (https://faculty.umn.edu/applicants). Letters of support are due by Thursday, December 1st: (1) two external letters of reference; (2) a letter from your proposed UMN faculty mentor; (3) a letter from up to one additional UMN faculty member (optional); and, (4) a letter from the department chair, director, or dean of the faculty mentor's primary unit.  Our faculty welcome requests to be mentors; prospective mentors should be contacted directly about this opportunity.  Interested applicants are encouraged to contact department chair, Valerie Tiberius ([email protected]), with general questions or for further details about how to apply. Evaluation and selection criteria for the program are available here: https://faculty.umn.edu/evaluation-and-selection.

Our department has a particular interest in nominations for this fellowship, because of our future plans.  In 2018 we will begin advertising two tenure-track faculty positions with a focusin feminist philosophy, philosophy of race, or non-western philosophy.  Through a year-long planning process, which included an invaluable visit from the APA’s Committee on the Status of Women’s site visit team, we as a department recognized that 21st-century philosophers must embrace not only the traditions of Western philosophy that have dominated the field, but also innovative new approaches that are transforming our discipline. These transformations can only be realized, though, if we include new voices.  We are committed to the view that diversification can enhance all philosophical research and education in a pluralistic, welcoming environment.  Given these plans, we hope that philosophers who received this postdoctoral fellowship  would find themselves  in very a supportive environment.
