Job description

Assistant Professor in Science, Philosophy and Religion

The Program in Religious Studies at Union College seeks to make a tenure-track appointment at the level of Assistant Professor in the area of Religion and Science. Advanced appointments with a shortened tenure clock may be considered for exceptional candidates. The appointee will be the Dona and Marshall Robinson Professor of Science, Philosophy and Religion, a position created through the generosity of Union College Alumnus and Trustee, David Breazzano. This position will be housed in the Philosophy Department, and the appointee is expected to offer courses in philosophy as well as in various aspects of religion and science for the Religious Studies program. It is also expected that the appointee will participate in General Education by teaching First Year Preceptorial and/or Sophomore Research Seminar.

Applicants should have strong grounding in one of the sciences, normally evidenced by formal education, research and publications, as well as hold a PhD in a relevant religious studies field. Demonstrated experience in teaching across science, philosophy and religion is required, and evidence of building institutional connections between religious studies and science is highly valued. Union College recognizes the rich possibilities of interdisciplinary studies and sees this position as exemplifying the complementarity of humanistic and scientific education. Applicants should address how they would promote connections between religious studies and science at Union. Applicants should also state their areas of teaching competence in religion and science and in philosophy, together with their research expertise.

Teaching load is 2 courses per 10-week trimester, 6 courses per academic year, with a one-course reduction in the first year. Pre-tenure faculty are eligible for a sabbatical after a successful third-year review. Salary and benefits are competitive. The College offers strong support for both teaching and research.

Union College is an equal opportunity employer and strongly committed to student and workforce diversity. Increasing diversity on campus is a critical priority for Union, one that is integral to our mission of preparing students for a globally interconnected world. Our goal is not only to increase diversity, but to support a diverse environment in which people from varied backgrounds can succeed and thrive. As such, we welcome applications from members of groups traditionally underrepresented in the field. Applicants are encouraged to state in their cover letter how they will enhance the diversity of offerings and educational experiences if hired. Union provides a blend of intellectual, social and cultural opportunities to facilitate the integrated academic, social and personal development of a diverse community. We value and are committed to a host of diverse populations and cultures including, but not limited to, those based on race, religion, disability, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, national origin and veteran status. Union College is committed to providing access and will provide reasonable accommodation in its application process to individuals with disabilities who request such accommodations.

Founded in 1795, Union College was the first college chartered by Board of Regents of the State of New York, and it continues to be one of the premier Liberal Arts Colleges in the country. Located in the heart of New York’s Capital District, Union College’s stunning campus is only a short drive away from New York City, Boston, and Montreal (all at around a three-hour drive away). For more about Union College please see: www.union.edu.

Applicants should submit a cover letter including a statement regarding experience working with diverse student populations and/or ability to contribute to a diverse community, a current curriculum vitae, and graduate transcripts for recent PhDs, through our online application.  Please provide names and contact information for three references when you complete the online application.  An email will be sent automatically requesting that they upload their letter of recommendation to our system. Review of applications will begin on December 15 and will continue until the position is filled. Further information on the position can be obtained from Prof. Peter Bedford, Director, Religious Studies Program at [email protected].
