Job description

The Keck School of Medicine of USC and the School of Philosophy in the USC Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences at the University of Southern California (Los Angeles, California) together seek applicants for a tenured or tenure-track joint appointment in medical ethics/bioethics.  The appointment would be in Medicine and Philosophy, and would ideally begin July or August 2018. The position is open to applicants of all ranks, but a qualified senior candidate would be appointed to an endowed chair with a nationally competitive package.

The ideal candidate will be capable of developing a clear and broad vision of the future of ethics education for students of medicine and other healthcare professions and participating in national and global discussion of scholars and policymakers on the ethical issues presented by biomedical research and practice.  The ideal candidate would have demonstrated excellence in research in medical ethics and/or bioethics, and in teaching medical ethics/bioethics at the undergraduate or graduate levels. The ideal candidate would also have an interest in teaching health professional students, and in ethics consultation in clinical and research settings.

A terminal degree (preferably a PhD in philosophy, or someone with medical training who has extensive experience in medical/bioethics) is required by the time of appointment. Expected duties include active research in medical/bioethics, graduate supervision, classroom teaching at all levels, participation (or leadership) in ethics consultation activities, and departmental/ school committee service. The exact teaching load and distribution of duties between Keck and Dornsife will be developed in collaboration with the successful candidate, informed by his or her greatest strengths and interests.

The Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California is a leading school of medicine in a major research university, with nearly 1700 full-time faculty, 2800 voluntary faculty physicians, 1800 staff, 800 medical students, 1500 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and 1100 resident physicians.  Clinical care is provided in both private and public care settings at Keck Hospital, Norris Cancer Hospital and the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center located on the Health Sciences Campus, at USC Verdugo Hills Hospital, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and a number of satellite sites.

The School of Philosophy, now ranked 8th among departments at US universities, has a robust educational program at the bachelors, masters, and doctoral levels in all fields, including ethics and normative philosophy.

USC Health is characterized by collaboration across a number of schools in addressing current and emergent issues in health care, health economics and policy, health administration, and societal and political issues affecting health and welfare.  USC’s distinctive features include its health related professional schools in dentistry, gerontology, occupational therapy, pharmacy, and departments of physical therapy, occupational therapy, and preventive medicine (public health).

All applications require a cover letter, a CV, evidence of teaching excellence, and names of at least three referees; applications at the rank of Assistant Professor also require a writing sample. The review of files will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. We do not plan to interview at the APA. All applicants must submit an electronic application on the USC job website: https://usccareers.usc.edu/ (click or paste in browser).
