Job description

Tilburg University seeks to appoint a full professor of philosophy of science. The particular area of expertise is open. Alignment with disciplines pursued at Tilburg University and with its strategic research and impact themes is valued.

Tilburg University

The motto of Tilburg University is ‘Understanding Society’. The university has schools for economics and management, social and behavioral sciences, law, humanities, and theology. As of January 2018, the School of Humanities will become the School of Humanities and Digital Sciences. Its departments are Communication and Cognition, Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence, Cultural Studies, and Philosophy, while the school also hosts the University College Tilburg. Taught programs include Communication and Information Sciences, including a specialization Cognitive Science and AI, Data Science and Society, Cultural Studies with a particular emphasis on ‘online culture’, Philosophy, and Liberal Arts and Sciences. There are three university-wide strategic themes for research and impact: Empowering the Resilient society, Enhancing Health and Wellbeing, and Creating Value from Data. The Department of Philosophy is responsible for an undergraduate and a graduate program in philosophy and for compulsory courses on philosophy of science and on ethics for undergraduate students from other programs.

 

Candidate profile

With the new appointment, the School seeks to strengthen philosophy of science in Tilburg University, the Department of Philosophy and its research center TiLPS. We look for a colleague

  • with enthusiasm for teaching, and preferably
  • with experience in teaching both philosophy majors and non-philosophy majors;
  • with a good publication record;
  • who is engaged in original research and will submit grant applications;
  • who will be a committed supervisor for Ph.D. candidates; and
  • who is willing to reach out to a wider public, beyond academic philosophy, and
  • who will take on leadership roles as needed.

The new colleague is a team player who advances philosophy of science through teaching and research in collaboration with colleagues from philosophy and other disciplines, at Tilburg University, in the Netherlands and abroad.

Employment terms and conditions

Depending on experience, record, and current position, the appointment may be for two years with the perspective of appointment for an indefinite period thereafter, or immediately for an indefinite period. We look for a full time or almost fulltime colleague (0.8 – 1.0 fte). The selected candidate will be ranked in the Dutch university employment system as full professor (“Hoogleraar 2”). The gross salary depends on qualifications and experience and ranges between € 5.334, - and € 7.766 -gross per month for a full time employment of 38 hours per week. The salary is supplemented with an annual holiday pay and an end-of-year bonus. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may qualify for a temporary tax-free allowance equal to 30% of their taxable salary. The university will apply for such an allowance on their behalf. If the candidate does not speak Dutch yet, a sufficient passive understanding of Dutch will have to be acquired within two year after appointment. The university will facilitate courses for that purpose, if needed. The Tilburg School of Humanities will provide assistance in finding suitable accommodation.
