The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies in the College of Arts and Humanities invites applications and nominations for the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor of Philosophy.

In January 2017, the University System of Georgia Board of Regents voted to consolidate Armstrong State University and Georgia Southern University. The new 27,000-student university will be named Georgia Southern University with campuses in Savannah, Statesboro, and Hinesville. Within this setting, the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies contributes to a rich undergraduate experience in both its support of the university core curriculum and its own thriving programs. The department offers a traditional undergraduate major in Philosophy as well as a Philosophy major with a Religious Studies track, and we offer minors in both Philosophy and Religious Studies. The program has a very active student community. The person hired into this position will be expected to actively contribute to the further growth of our program through excellent teaching, active recruitment, and engagement with the student community.

Position Description: Reporting to the chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, the Assistant Professor position requires a teaching load of three undergraduate courses per semester, an active research agenda, and regular faculty service responsibilities. The possibility exists for one course release per year for the purpose of scholarship. This is a tenure-track, academic 10-month appointment, with additional voluntary summer teaching possible. This position’s departmental home will be on the Statesboro campus. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications:

• Earned Ph.D. in Philosophy or a closely related field by July 1, 2018

• Demonstrated specialization in Ancient Greek Philosophy

• Evidence of effective teaching

• Evidence of active scholarship and a future research agenda

• Must be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of employment without assistance from the institution

Preferred Qualifications:

• Areas of additional teaching competency are open, with departmental interests in medieval philosophy, American philosophy, African philosophy, and/or the philosophy of race

• Teaching experience in introductory-level undergraduate courses such as Introduction to Philosophy, Critical Thinking, and/or Introduction to Ethics

• Teaching experience in Ancient Greek Philosophy
