Job description

Grote Chair in the Philosophy of Mind and Logic

Competitive salary

Consistently ranked among the world’s top universities, UCL is London’s Global University. UCL’s international reputation for excellence in research and education extends across all academic disciplines, from medicine, engineering, and the built environment to laws, arts and humanities.

UCL’s Department of Philosophy is one of the leading departments of its kind in the UK.  It boasts particular strengths in metaphysics, the philosophy of mind, the philosophy of perception, epistemology, moral and political philosophy, Ancient Philosophy and Kantian and post-Kantian continental philosophy, as well as rich relationships with the Institute of Philosophy, the Institute of Classical Studies, the Aristotelian Society and the Royal Institute of Philosophy.  The Department now seeks an exceptional individual to join this thriving research environment as Grote Chair in the Philosophy of Mind and Logic - one of only two named Chairs in UCL’s Faculty of Arts & Humanities and previously held by some of the most influential twentieth century philosophers.

The Grote Chair will enhance the work of this dynamic and collegial Department by offering strong research leadership capacity that helps to further build the team’s existing reputation for outstanding research, as well as develop an exceptionally talented cohort of junior philosophers.  UCL seeks an inspiring and collaborative individual who will relish working with colleagues within the Department and the wider Faculty of Art & Humanities, and promote a culture of interdisciplinary working.   In addition to a record of internationally outstanding personal research and external grant funding, you will bring strong interpersonal skills, a natural inclination towards collaboration and supportive team working, and the passion to inspire and motivate colleagues to succeed.  You will also be committed to the highest quality of teaching and student experience, and encourage colleagues to excel in teaching as well as research.  This iconic appointment is a unique opportunity to contribute towards the growth and development of a leading Department of Philosophy.

UCL welcomes applications from talented candidates from both the analytic tradition and the continental tradition; whatever your background you will bring internationally recognised research in a field relevant to the Department’s academic portfolio together with a track record of contributing to a culture of high performance, collaboration, innovation and impact.
