Philosophy job opening: Lecturer

The Department of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts at UBC-Vancouver invites applications for the position of Lecturer, to commence September 1, 2018.

The appointment is for one-year, from September 1 2018 to 31 August 2019. Lecturer positions are full-time appointments without review (i.e., non-tenure track), which are renewable for successive terms, subject to the availability of funding, demonstration of excellence in teaching, and departmental teaching needs, in accordance with the Collective Agreement between UBC and the UBC Faculty Association. The department has current teaching needs in history of philosophy (ancient Greek and early modern philosophy through 19th century) and other areas, particularly in philosophy of religion and existentialism. The successful candidate will be expected to carry a teaching load of 24 credits (i.e., eight 3-credit courses), based on a 3-3 load in winter 2018-19 and 2 additional courses in the summer of 2019. In addition, the position will involve administrative service. In cases where an extraordinary level of additional administrative responsibilities is assigned by the Head, a 3-credit teaching reduction may be granted. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Positions are subject to final budgetary approval.

Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. in Philosophy. We seek applicants who have a strong commitment to teaching and a track record of teaching excellence. The teaching load will include undergraduate courses in history of philosophy (ancient and/or 17th through 19th century) and may include additional courses such as Introduction to Philosophy, Philosophy of Religion and Existentialism. Information about the Department is available on the web at: http://www.philosophy.ubc.ca/.

Equity and diversity are essential to academic excellence. An open and diverse community fosters the inclusion of voices that have been underrepresented or discouraged. We encourage applications from members of groups that have been marginalized on any grounds enumerated under the B.C. Human Rights Code, including sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, racialization, disability, political belief, religion, marital or family status, age, and/or status as a First Nation, Métis, Inuit, or Indigenous person.  All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
