CANADA RESEARCH CHAIR IN PHILOSOPHY: POLITICS AND LANGUAGE

The Department of Philosophy at The University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver Campus invites applications for the position of Canada Research Chair (Tier I) in Philosophy: Politics and Language.  The Chair is expected to be a full-time tenured appointment made at the rank of Professor in the Department of Philosophy.  The successful applicant will be a leading and internationally recognized scholar, whose profile and research proposal demonstrate an excellent fit with CRC program criteria and the aims of the position: to create world-leading research on politics and language, media and liberal democracy. The Chair will be expected to maintain an outstanding program of research, to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, to supervise undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows, and to contribute to service at the departmental level and beyond.

The CRC in Politics and Language will join the Faculty of Arts, home to 24 Canada Research Chairs across a wide range of humanities and social science units, and the UBC Philosophy Department.  The CRC will add to existing strengths at UBC in philosophy, linguistics, rhetoric, psychology, sociology, media studies and political discourse. The chair is expected to develop strong interdisciplinary linkages through engagement with departments and interdisciplinary units on campus.

The Canada Research Chairs Program supports outstanding researchers in areas that will further the institution’s strategic research plan.  All Chair nominations are subject to review and final approval by the CRC Secretariat.  To meet the criteria of the CRC program, Tier I nominees must: be outstanding and innovative world-class researchers whose accomplishments have made a major impact in their fields; be recognized internationally as leaders in their fields; have superior records of attracting and supervising graduate students and postdoctoral fellows (taking into account different practices in the relevant field or discipline); propose an original, innovative research program of the highest quality; and, as chair holders, be expected to attract, develop and retain excellent trainees, students and future researchers.  Nominees for Tier I positions must be full professors (or associate professors who are expected to be promoted to the full professor level within one or two years of the nomination).  Please consult the Canada Research Chairs website for full program information, including further details on eligibility criteria: www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca and http://www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/program-programme/nomination-mise_en_candidature-eng.aspx.

This position is subject to final budgetary approval. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.  The start date for this position can be as early as July 1, 2018.
