Job description

Southwestern University’s Department of Philosophy invites applications for a one-year visiting appointment in Philosophy for the 2018-19 academic year  Candidates with a strong background in 20th and 21st century continental traditions and/or global philosophy who can also teach introductory courses in feminist and/or race theory will be given special consideration.  Our department strives to model a range of interdisciplinary approaches to the teaching and study of philosophy, situating philosophical ideas in their social, political, and cultural contexts, while critically evaluating (and departing from) the methods and practices of contemporary philosophy. We welcome novel and critical approaches to traditional classes, as well as ideas for new courses. This position includes some opportunities for both.   The course load is six sections of five separate undergraduate courses/year, including introductory philosophy, ethics, and upper-level topics courses.  Courses are capped at 25 students. 

Qualifications include Ph.D. prior to appointment or ABD.  The successful candidate will demonstrate potential for interdisciplinary collaboration, which may include contributions to one or more of the university’s interdisciplinary degree programs (Feminist Studies, Environmental Studies, Race and Ethnicity Studies, Latin American Studies and International Studies).  Evidence of excellence in undergraduate teaching and commitment to providing a broad-based liberal arts education are essential.  Candidates who can contribute to the department's strong commitment to enhancing diversity and creating an inclusive community are also preferred.
