Job description

The Department of Philosophy at Shandong University's School of Philosophy and Social Development is seeking to appoint up to two early career scholars at the level of Assistant Professor. This is a tenure-track position, with a probationary period of three years. The successful candidate is expected to start in September 2019.

Shandong University is one of the oldest universities in China: consistently ranking among China’s top 20 and the best in Shandong province. The Department of Philosophy is especially strong and pluralistic. We have research strengths in Logic, Philosophy of Mind, Ethics, the History of Western Philosophy, and Chinese Philosophy. We offer master’s and doctoral degree courses, and consistently manage to place our undergraduate and master’s students in world-leading philosophy graduate programs.

Currently we are seeking to complement our research strengths by hiring an analytic metaphysician or an analytic epistemologist. A competence and an ability to teach introductory and advanced courses in Philosophy of Language is required. Where an applicant specializes in Metaphysics, a further competence in Philosophy of Science is preferable. Where an applicant specializes in Epistemology, a further competence in Formal Epistemology is preferable. PhD in hand desirable, but candidates at or very near subsmission will be considered.

The jobholder will be expected to:

  1. produce first-rate research, evidenced by publications in world-leading philosophy journals,
  2. help with the teaching needs of the Department: teaching 4 courses per year,
  3. apply for external funding,
  4. facilitate the Department’s international cooperation by organizing conferences and other forms of academic exchange.

Teaching will be entirely in English, but a willingness to learn Chinese will be appreciated.

The jobholder will be given an opportunity to teach graduate courses in their area of specialization, and help expand our undergraduate curriculum. Shandong University will provide them with health insurance, subsidized housing, and research funding for the first three years of their contract (about 11,500 USD). The salary is yet to be determined, but is anticipated to be about 220,000 RMB (32,000 USD) per year.

Interested scholars should send the following materials (preferably as a single pdf file) to [email protected]:

  1. Cover letter (indicating future research plans),
  2. Academic CV (including publications and courses taught),
  3. Writing sample (10,000-15,000 words; can include several papers),
  4. Evidence of teaching effectiveness.

They should also arrange for 3 references to be sent on their behalf to the same email address.

For best chances of success, all application materials should reach us by November 30, 2018.

First-round (online) interviews are expected to take place in mid-December. Second-round (online) interviews are expected to take place in late February. Fly-ins are expected to take place in April.
