Overview

The Department of Philosophy at California State University, San Bernardino is hiring a full-time, academic-year, tenure track Assistant Professor. The Areas of Specialization and Concentration are open but preference will be given to candidates whose teaching competencies will enable us to expand and diversify our curricular offerings. The Department is interested, for example, in candidates who have strong teaching credentials in one or more of the following (or similar) fields: the philosophy of race, the philosophy of gender and sexuality, feminist philosophy, Asian philosophy, Latin American philosophy, African philosophy, ancient Greek philosophy, social/political philosophy, existentialism, or environmental philosophy. (This list is meant to be indicative, not exhaustive.) Priority may be given to candidates who can teach in more than one such area.
 
California State University, San Bernardino is located in San Bernardino in the Inland Empire, 60 miles east of Los Angeles. CSUSB offers programs through the colleges of Arts and Letters, Business and Public Administration, Education, Natural Sciences, Social and Behavioral Sciences and operates a satellite campus in Palm Desert located in Coachella Valley. CSUSB serves approximately 20,700 students and offers 47 undergraduate, 35 graduate and one doctoral degree as well as 13 programs with national accreditation.

Typical Activities

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate classes in the university's General Education program and for majors in Philosophy. Service responsibilities in the department, including academic advising for our majors, are shared equally among all tenure-track/tenured faculty. The department and the university expect the successful candidate to undertake a meaningful program of original research as part of achieving tenure and maintaining currency in the field.

In addition, new faculty are encouraged to develop and participate in activities that support the university's strategic plan. This plan emphasizes: a) student success; b) faculty and staff success; c) stewarding resources; d) community engagement and partnerships; and, e) enhancing the campus identity.

Minimum Qualifications

PhD degree in Philosophy (candidates who are ABD may be considered, but candidates who will have the degree in hand by the time of employment are preferred).
