Job description |
Vassar College, a selective private liberal arts institution located in the scenic Hudson Valley of New York, invites applications for a one-year Adjunct Assistant Professor position, beginning August, 2019. Vassar College is an affirmative action and equal opportunity employer with a strong commitment to increasing the diversity of the campus community and the curriculum, and promoting an environment of equality, inclusion, and respect for difference. Candidates who can contribute to this goal through their teaching, research, advising, and other activities are encouraged to identify their strengths and experiences in this area. Individuals from groups whose underrepresentation in the American professoriate has been severe and longstanding are particularly encouraged to apply. The appointment will be in Philosophy, but with a contractual obligation to teach one course for the Chinese and Japanese Department. PhD expected by time of appointment. Position carries benefits as eligible, including health insurance. The successful candidate will have a 2-2 load, teaching three courses in the Philosophy Department and one course for the Department of Chinese and Japanese. For the Philosophy Department, at least two courses must specifically be on Chinese and/or comparative philosophy. Previous offerings in these areas have included surveys of ancient Chinese philosophy, Neo-Confucianism, and Buddhism, but specific courses and content are flexible. Other courses taught for the Philosophy Department will depend on the interests of the successful candidate and departmental needs. For the Department of Chinese and Japanese, the successful candidate will teach Introduction to Chinese and Japanese Literature. Course content is very flexible, but often includes classic literature like Dream of the Red Chamber and The Tale of Genji. All teaching will be done in translation, but the successful candidate will be capable of research on texts in the original Chinese. Reading knowledge of Japanese is an advantage but not required. Previous experience teaching non-philosophical Chinese or Japanese literature is not required, but the successful candidate will be enthusiastic about participation in the Department of Chinese and Japanese. Candidates should submit a letter of application, C.V., a diversity statement highlighting contributions to and/or future plans for promoting diversity and inclusion through teaching, research and/or professional involvements, graduate school transcript (unofficial copies accepted for initial application), at least three letters of recommendation, and teaching portfolio.
