Job description

The principal duties and responsibilities attached to this post will be:

Research
• Engage actively in research and scholarly activity and disseminate the results of research through
publication in international peer-reviewed academic journals and by other appropriate means
• Supervise and manage student research projects and supervise postdoctoral researchers
• Engage actively in initiatives to successfully attract research funding
• Engage in the development of interdisciplinary research initiatives

Teaching
• Teach selected undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses as may be assigned by the Head of School.
• Supervise undergraduate and taught Masters research projects
• Engage in programme and curriculum design and review
• Design and implement a range of appropriate methods of teaching and assessment
• Provide academic counselling and advice to students

Contribution
• Contribute to the academic life of the School, College and University and to the wider educational
community
• Support student recruitment activities
• Undertake other such duties as directed by the Head of School in line with the contract of employment.


Selection Criteria:

Mandatory:
The applicant is required to:

• Hold a PhD in Philosophy awarded by a recognised Institute;

• Research in an area that strengthens or strategically complements the existing research profile of the School of Philosophy. 

• Have a high-quality publication record commensurate with the stage of their career;

• Be committed to high-quality university-level teaching, learning and student support

• Possess excellent communication and presentation skills;

Early career philosophers are invited to apply to UCD's Ad Astra fellowship scheme. The scheme will run on annual basis for 5 years, each year approximately 65 positions will be available across the various Schools in UCD. The fellowships run for 5 years with permanency review period after 4 years. The scheme is highly competitive and is intended for recent PhDs with a proven track record of publication and funding success. Applications will consist of a cover letter, in which the applicant will describe how their academic interests fit with those of UCD School of Philosophy, a complete CV including all research publications and research grants to date together with any submitted forthcoming publications and the names and contact details of three potential referees. The deadline for the 2019 scheme is April 22. Further similar rounds will be advertised in the course of the next 4 academic years.
