General Statement of Duties:

The Philosophy Department at Westfield State University seeks applications for part-time instructors to cover one section of Introduction to Philosophy of Religion (PHIL-0109) and one section of Introduction to Ethics (PHIL-0102), or to cover both if qualified.

COURSES FOR FALL 2019:

PHIL 0109 INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY OF RELIGION M 5:30-8:15 PM

PHIL 0102 INTRODUCTION TO ETHICS W 5:30-8:15 PM

The official course description for PHIL-0109 is as follows:

Introduction to Philosophy of Religion (3) Introduction to philosophy through analysis of religious beliefs and values. Significant topics include the problem of the existence of god(s), the nature of faith, the nature of god(s) and reality, the question of religious revelation, the reliability of religious experience, as well as the sociological and psychological import of religious belief. Special attention is given to the fundamentals of critical analysis and the interpretation of original texts.

The official course description for PHIL-0102 is as follows:

Introduction to Ethics (3) Introduction to philosophy through consideration of classic and contemporary theories of morality and the best life. Topics may include the concepts of freedom, happiness, justice, dignity, virtue, right/wrong, good/bad, alienation, loneliness, obligation, responsibility, rights and duties, as well as the structure of morality. Special attention is given to the fundamentals of critical analysis.

If you are interested in teaching one of these courses but not the other, please make that clear in your cover letter.

You will be responsible for constructing the syllabus and all assignments, and for all classroom instruction and grading. No service responsibilities are attached to this post.

Requirements:

Minimum qualifications.

A master's degree in philosophy, in hand, preferably with a concentration in philosophy of religion or philosophical ethics, or in both. University-level teaching experience preferred, but not essential.

In line with the American Philosophical Association's policies, members of groups underrepresented in the philosophical academy are strongly encouraged to apply.

Exceptions to these requirements may be made for sound academic reasons in certain specialized academic areas. Applicants who do not meet the qualifications as stated above but who can demonstrate exceptional talent and accomplishment are also encouraged to apply.
