Job description

Qualifications: Ph.D. in Philosophy prior to appointment, a strong teaching record, and evidence of the ability to publish and engage in professional activities in the area of specialization.

The department has strong needs in history of 20th century philosophy, ethical theory, and professional ethics (e.g., business ethics, bioethics). The department welcomes expertise in phenomenology, aesthetics/philosophy of art, and feminist philosophy, as well as applicants who could contribute to teaching interdisciplinary humanities courses. The department embraces a diversity of philosophical approaches, especially those that view philosophical questions and methods in a global context and those that engage with issues of public concern.  In particular, the department is interested in candidates who can contribute to an interdisciplinary “Deep Humanities & the Arts” initiative that is motivated by the recognition that the humanities have a critical role to play in the formative moment of the design of technology.

Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.

Responsibilities: In addition to courses in area of specialization, the candidate will be expected to teach general education courses that could include Introduction to Philosophy; Moral Issues; Introduction to Aesthetics; Asian Philosophy; Professional and Business Ethics; and Philosophy of Science.  Scholarship, committee work, and department service are expected.  The current teaching load is 3 courses per semester (approximately 120 students per term) with service expectations at department, college, and university levels.  Previous collective bargaining agreements (including that in force through 2020) have offered probationary faculty a reduced teaching load for their first two years on the tenure track.

Candidate must address the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.

Salary Range:  Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Starting Date:  August 13, 2020

Eligibility: Employment is contingent upon proof of eligibility to work in the United States.

Application Procedures:

For full consideration, send a letter of application, curriculum vitae, statement of teaching interests/philosophy, evidence of teaching proficiency (e.g., student evaluation), description of research plans, writing sample (preferably 5000 words or less), and at least three confidential letters of recommendation with contact information by November 15, 2019 via https://apply.interfolio.com/67382 to the attention of Prof. Janet D. Stemwedel, Chair, Department of Philosophy, San José State University, One Washington Square, San José, CA 95192-0096.
