Job description

The Philosophy Department at Occidental College invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 2020. We welcome applications from candidates who demonstrate promise of successful scholarship and dedication to teaching excellence in the context of a global and inclusive liberal arts education.

The successful candidate will have the demonstrated expertise to:

  1. teach courses and mentor students in the thought of figures from, or historical texts by, members of groups that are underrepresented in academic philosophy, including at least one of the following areas: African and Africana philosophy, Arabic and Islamic philosophy, Asian philosophy (including Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Indian), Latin American philosophy, and Native American philosophy; and
  2. contribute courses that complement those the Department already offers in at least one of the following areas: History of Philosophy, Self & Community, or Experiential Learning.

Our faculty teach courses which fulfill a range of requirements within the College’s core program, including first-year writing seminars, and we value interdisciplinary connection to other programs. We are especially interested in candidates who are eager and able to teach these general education courses, and who can complement the existing curricula in: Black Studies, East Asian Studies, Latino/a and Latin American Studies, Religious Studies, or Spanish & French Studies.

Teaching responsibilities include five courses per year (with a one-course reduction in the first year, and a pre-tenure leave in the fourth year, pending favorable review). The position includes usual departmental and college-wide service responsibilities. Candidates must expect to have a PhD in philosophy in hand by the time of appointment.

Occidental College is committed to academic excellence in a diverse community and strongly encourages applications from candidates committed to the College’s mission of equity and excellence.

To apply, the following materials must be sent to [email protected]:

  • Letter of interest addressing preparation for the responsibilities articulated above
  • CV
  • Research statement
  • Writing sample
  • Statement of teaching philosophy that includes discussion of your demonstrated commitment to, past evidence of, and future plans for creating equitable opportunities for learning and mentoring, especially for underrepresented students
  • Evidence of teaching excellence, including a sample syllabus for a course that would fulfill our Diversity in Philosophy requirement through the study of the thought from, or historical texts by, members of groups that are underrepresented in academic philosophy
  • Three confidential letters of recommendation

Deadline for applications is November 1, 2019, 11:59pm PST. Although all applications submitted prior to the deadline will receive full consideration, the search committee appreciates applications received in advance of it.
