Job description

UNIVERSITY OF UTAH, SALT LAKE CITY, UT — ASSISTANT PROFESSOR/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR: The Department of Philosophy at the University of Utah seeks to hire a tenure-line professor at the rank of Assistant or early Associate Professor to begin in Fall 2020. We are seeking applicants with an AoS in Practical Reasoning (especially as it relates to Value Theory or Epistemology). The ideal applicant will work on ethical, moral, aesthetic, or epistemological issues at the intersection of philosophy and digital technology (e.g., AI, algorithm ethics, interactive online media), and help build on our existing partnership with computer science and related programs (e.g., the University of Utah’s highly ranked Entertainment Arts & Engineering program) through both their research and teaching contributions.

We welcome applications from early career scholars, ranging from graduate students expecting to defend by Summer 2020, to those who have recently been awarded tenure. Qualified candidates will be considered for appointments with tenure or advanced tenure clocks. Tenure-line faculty in the Philosophy Department carry a 2/2 teaching load, which may include a mix of undergraduate and graduate courses, along with expectations of graduate advising and other contributions to the department’s research and service missions.

The Department values its top-ranking in terms of percent of women
appointed in tenure-line positions (see: women-in-philosophy.org), and is committed to pursuing the benefits that such inclusiveness can bring to philosophical inquiry and the classroom. We enthusiastically welcome applications from candidates who share these values, and who possess a strong commitment to improving access to higher education for historically underrepresented students and can help the Department recruit these students as Philosophy Majors. Information pertaining to these issues should be included in your cover letter.

Applicants should provide a CV; cover letter; research statement; teaching statement; writing sample; and at least three letters of recommendation. Deadline: Nov. 1; review of files will begin on Oct. 15.
