Job description

LAKE FOREST COLLEGE invites applications for a tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor (PhD) or Instructor (ABD) of Philosophy, beginning August 2020. We seek applicants with broad interests and a love of teaching to offer a variety of courses in philosophy. Essential courses for this position are threefold: (1) 200- and 300-level courses in Asian philosophy suitable for both general students and philosophy and Asian Studies majors and minors, (2) 200- and 300-level philosophy courses to contribute to our minor program in Social Justice, and (3) 200-level business ethics courses for business majors. The business major requires students to complete one course in business ethics and this hire will support that requirement. Course offerings in other areas are welcome, based on the candidate’s interests and expertise, as is willingness to contribute to other programs on campus, such as Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies, Environmental Studies, Cinema Studies, etc. Faculty members normally teach 3 courses per semester (introductory to advanced undergraduate) with the usual non-teaching duties, including directing senior projects.

Lake Forest College’s philosophy major is organized historically, and the department is proud of its long history of very diverse elective offerings.  The Philosophy Department has long embraced a dual mission: (1) to provide comprehensive coverage of the central areas of philosophy for majors, including those interested in graduate study and (2) to encourage connections to other disciplines, to support other programs and the general mission of the College and to emphasize the ways philosophical reflection can enhance study in other disciplines. For more information on our department, see: http://www.lakeforest.edu/academics/programs/philosophy/.

A highly selective liberal arts college located on Chicago’s North Shore, Lake Forest College enrolls approximately 1,600 students from more than 40 states and from more than 70 countries. Lake Forest is one of the most diverse small colleges in the Midwest with nearly 40% of our student body comprised of domestic minority and international students. Most of our STEM pool is female and includes a significant number of first generation and traditionally underrepresented students. At Lake Forest College, the quality of a faculty member’s teaching is the most important criterion for evaluation. The College also expects peer-reviewed publications and active participation in the College community. Lake Forest College embraces diversity and encourages applications from women, members of historically underrepresented groups, veterans, and individuals with disabilities.

Dossiers should include CV, 3 letters of recommendation and evidence of teaching skills.  Please submit applications electronically, by email attachment, to philsearch2019@mx.lakeforest.edu. Deadline for applications is November 10. We will be interviewing at the 2020 Eastern Division APA Meeting January 8-11 in Philadelphia.
