Job description

The Department of Philosophy at Georgia State University (GSU) in Atlanta, GA, seeks applications for an anticipated position as a Lecturer. Start date: Fall 2020. The Department is home to a thriving, internationally recognized master’s program. GSU is a research university of the University System of Georgia that is committed to serving a diverse student body, and the Department is committed to building a diverse faculty.

The successful candidate will serve as the Department of Philosophy’s Coordinator of Graduate Teaching (CGT) and will help train, mentor, and supervise graduate students so that they can successfully teach their own classes. Duties will also include service to the department and the university and classroom teaching. The standard teaching load is four courses/semester. Roughly half of these courses are likely to be graduate-level pedagogy courses with the other courses primarily at the undergraduate level. Typically, the CGT teaches one of the pedagogy courses in the summer with additional compensation.

As part of their master’s degree program, all M.A. students teach their own classes—primarily Critical Thinking, Introduction to Philosophy, and Introduction to Ethics—and the Department has developed a lauded teacher-preparation program, centered on  a three-semester series of pedagogy courses. (See https://philosophy.gsu.edu/graduate/teaching-preparation/.) The Lecturer hired into this position will oversee this program.

In the University System of Georgia, lecturer positions are not tenure-track, but they are indefinitely renewable and have the opportunity for promotion to Senior Lecturer and Principal Senior Lecturer. The Department aims to hire a Lecturer to serve as CGT long-term, and the three Lecturers currently in the department have been at GSU for over 10 years each. Lecturers are full voting members of the Department (except on decisions regarding tenure-track faculty). Salary is expected to be $50,000-$55,000, depending on experience, with the possibility for additional compensation for summer teaching.

Minimum qualifications are a Ph.D. in Philosophy or related field at time of appointment. Candidates should send as a single PDF file: an application letter, CV, list of references with contact information, evidence of teaching effectiveness, and a statement about their preparation for serving as Coordinator of Graduate Teaching, to [email protected]. In the application letter or teaching material, applicants should explicitly address their readiness for effectively teaching GSU’s highly diverse student body that includes many first-generation college students. Questions should be addressed to the chair of the search committee, Tim O’Keefe, at [email protected]. For more information about the Department, see https://philosophy.gsu.edu/.

Consideration of applications begins immediately. To ensure full consideration, complete applications should be received by November 1.

An offer of employment will be conditional on background verification. Georgia State University is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate against applicants due to race, ethnicity, gender, veteran status, or on the basis of disability or any other federal, state or local protected class.
