Job description

The Georgia Institute of Technology’s School of Public Policy is seeking applications for a visiting faculty position in Spring 2020. This visiting faculty opportunity is a full-time position with eligibility for benefits. The candidate will be expected to teach two courses, to actively engage in research and scholarly activities, and to participate in service to the School, College, and Institute.

We are seeking candidates with a Ph.D. in philosophy with expertise to teach Modern Philosophy and one other course in our Philosophy Program (https://spp.gatech.edu/philosophy/classes). Modern Philosophy, as we offer it, is a typical survey course, from Bacon and Descartes through the beginning of the 20th century, including philosophical responses to modern science in the rational and empirical traditions. We are particularly interested in candidates who can support our efforts to revitalize our Center for Ethics and Technology and/or whose research might be relevant for one of the policy areas of the department: science, technology and innovation; energy and environmental; information and communication technologies; regional innovation; and urban economic development. Our work in these areas benefits from synergies with Georgia Tech’s world-class engineering, computer science, design, and biomedical science curriculums, and a tradition of interdisciplinary innovative research. Candidates are expected to demonstrate an exceptional commitment to the teaching and mentoring of students.

Applicants should submit the following information: (1) a letter of application address to the Chair of the School of Public Policy; (2) a curriculum vita; (3) a statement of research and teaching interests with clear evidence of demonstrated teaching success; (4) a copy of at least one publication; and (5) names and contact information of three references. Please apply electronically by sending applicant materials as one combined PDF to: [email protected]. Requests for information may be directed to the Director of the Philosophy Program, Dr. Michael Hoffmann at [email protected]. Applicants are encouraged to submit applicant materials by November 15, 2019 for optimal consideration. Applicant screening will begin immediately and will continue to be reviewed until the position is filled. Interviews will be conducted virtually during the week of November 18, 2019. An earned doctorate is required by the start of the appointment, and a background check must be completed prior to employment.

The School of Public Policy has 30 faculty members and we instruct students in undergraduate, master’s and Ph.D. programs. See our webpage at http://spp.gatech.edu/ for more information. Georgia Tech is a top-ranked public research university situated in the heart of Atlanta, a diverse and vibrant city with great economic and cultural strengths.
