The UCLA Department of Philosophy is offering a one year (with the possibility of a one-year renewal) post-doctoral research fellowship to a recent Ph.D. in philosophy whose primary area of research lies in logic, language, or mind. We would especially welcome applications from scholars whose research addresses issues concerning diversity and/or who have contributed to equity and diversity efforts in the areas of teachings and/or service.

The fellow is required to teach two quarter-length courses in the first year and one quarter-length course in the second year of the fellowship; the fellow will also be asked to attend talks and conferences, and to participate actively in the philosophy department community. The bulk of their time will be devoted to independent research. Candidates must demonstrate a strong interest in a career involving teaching and research in philosophy. The fellowship offers a competitive salary, small research stipend, and full benefits with a start date in the summer of 2020.

Typical candidates will have a doctorate in philosophy, and it must be granted prior to official start date. (e.g., if starting August 1, Ph.D. must be completed no later than July 31). Proof of degree completion is required prior to start of appointment.

One or two postdoctoral fellowships will be available depending on funding.

Please submit the following: 1) a writing sample in the candidate’s field of specialization; 2) a statement of research interests; 3) a statement describing their experience and approach to fostering diversity in the classroom and the profession; 4) CV; 5) three or more confidential letters of reference; 6) evidence of teaching effectiveness.

To facilitate blind review of writing samples et alia, applicants are asked to also submit their writing sample, statement of research interests, and diversity statement without references that would reveal their identities, professional titles, or Ph.D. granting institution.

For full consideration of your application, please apply by December 1, 2019.
UCLA has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty, students and staff. Candidates will be assessed on the basis of research and teaching excellence, and the candidate’s ability to make a positive contribution to the department’s climate. Women and underrepresented minority candidates are encouraged to apply. Consideration will also be given to candidates whose experience in teaching, research, or community service has prepared them to contribute to diversity and excellence.
