Position Description: The Department of Philosophy at the University of Washington invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Philosophy with AOS: Philosophy of Race or Philosophy of Law, and AOC: Philosophy of Law or Philosophy of Race. This is a full-time, tenure eligible position with an anticipated start date of September 2020. Tenure track faculty have an annual service period of nine months (Sept 16-June 15). All University of Washington faculty engage in research, teaching, and service. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a robust research program that complements existing scholarship in the department; teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including an undergraduate course in philosophy of law; serve on dissertation committees and mentor graduate and undergraduate students; actively participate in service to the university, profession, and broader communities; and promote a diverse and inclusive community of faculty, staff, and students. The UW Department of Philosophy is a vibrant community of philosophers committed to excellence in research and teaching. With an expansive vision and an outward focus, the department aspires to practice “engaged philosophy,” believing our discipline has vital contributions to offer all areas of inquiry. We aim to foster interdisciplinary conversations in which philosophical tools and methods are brought to bear upon problems and topics of public interest. Our faculty form the core of the UW Program on Ethics, and we have a strong research cluster in philosophy of science. The department hosts the Neuroethics Thrust research team and the Center for Philosophy for Children. We are the editorial home for the journal Philosophy of Science.
