Job description

Ethics in AI Institute Director

Competitive Salary

The University of Oxford has launched a major initiative in Ethics in AI, leading to the establishment of an Institute for Ethics in AI, to be based in the Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities, under the aegis of the Faculty of Philosophy. The Institute will build upon the University’s world-class capabilities in the humanities to lead the study of the ethical implications of artificial intelligence and other new computing technologies.

The University now seeks a Director for the Institute to provide intellectual vision and to give strategic leadership to the Institute, as it establishes its research programmes and related activities. The post will be open to academics with an international reputation and wide-ranging research and leadership profile within Ethics in AI.

The Director will be the public face of the Institute and will oversee its activities, playing a substantive role in developing the Institute’s relations with its fellows and students; within the Humanities Division; across the collegiate University; with external bodies and the wider public; as well as the Institute’s Advisory Council. The Director will have oversight of the efficient and effective administration of the Institute. The Director will report to the Philosophy Faculty Board Chair.

The ideal candidate will have:

A PhD/DPhil in a field relevant to the activities of the Institute.

  • An outstanding record of research achievement at an international level, with a strong publication record, relevant to the field of Ethics in AI.
  • Demonstrable ability to exercise effective leadership in establishing, developing and maintaining a world-class research initiative, alongside a strong commitment to broad engagement to promote the understanding of Ethics in AI.
  • Evidence of the ability to operate with credibility across a range of academic disciplines and a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration across the Institute’s fields of activity, beginning from the Institute’s footing in Philosophy.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to manage and motivate others and the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with a wide range of people.
  • Significant experience of developing research strategies and managing research projects.
  • Successful track record of attracting and managing significant research income, alongside an ability and willingness to engage with the Institute’s fundraising activities.
  • Experience of, and excellent reputation in, teaching and academic supervision.
