Job description

The Department of Philosophy invites applications to fill a 9-month (academic year) tenure-track position with a potential opportunity of summer teaching based on departmental need and student demand. The successful candidate will be expected to be effective undergraduate and graduate teachers, develop a productive research program, contribute to department and college initiatives and leadership, and to be committed to teaching lower level philosophy courses as part of a core curriculum. In keeping with Texas State University’s transition to a stronger research focus, we seek someone with success in securing external funding for research. Members of the department have secured funding through NSF, NEH, and Humanities Texas, in recent years.

The Department of Philosophy at Texas State University offers the BA in philosophy, the MA in applied philosophy and ethics, undergraduate minors in philosophy, religious studies, and value studies, a graduate certificate in professional ethics, and beginning Fall 2020 will offer a BA in religious studies. Course assignments will be based on expertise and departmental need, possibly including doctoral-level responsible conduct of research/research ethics. There are expectations of service to the department, college, university, and profession. We strongly support cross-disciplinary initiatives. The Department has 40 full-time faculty members in Fall 2019, and teaches the largest number of undergraduates of any philosophy department at a public university in Texas, over 10,000 each academic year for the past eight years. Departmental activities include the Philosophy Dialogues, a program of ~60 public philosophy events each semester including lectures, films, and discussions; an active chapter of Phi Sigma Tau; an annual student symposium; an annual alumni banquet; an Ethics Bowl team, and an International Business Ethics Case Competition team.
