Job Description

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Central Florida (UCF) seeks to hire an assistant professor of philosophy with specialization in Ancient Greek and Roman history of philosophy.  The department seeks competency in two of the following areas: ethics; formal logic; philosophy of science; a second historical period, topic, or figure. The teaching load is 5 (3/2) classes per academic year prior to tenure (3/3 post tenure). Research expectations are consistent with productivity in the discipline in a major metropolitan research university. The position includes usual service activity. This is a 9-month per year, tenure-earning position with the possibility of optional summer teaching. The position is expected to begin August 8, 2020.

The successful candidate will join the Department of Philosophy in the College of Arts and Humanities. The department includes degree programs in Philosophy, Humanities & Cultural Studies, and Religion & Cultural Studies, and graduate certificate programs in Cognitive Sciences and Theoretical and Applied Ethics.

Position Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have an awarded Ph.D. in philosophy or a closely related area from an accredited institution by May 31, 2020. The successful candidate must also have college or university-level teaching experience and research in Ancient Greek and Roman history of philosophy appropriate to time before, during or since degree conferral and possess at least two of the following as areas of competence: ethics, formal logic, philosophy of science, and an additional historical period, topic, or figure in the history of philosophy.

Preferences

1) Evidence of success or considerable promise in research productivity in publications and/or externally funded activity is highly desirable and 2) Demonstrated experience in teaching or ability to teach from at least one of the following: introductory level courses in philosophy; upper-level course(s) in the Area of Specialization and Areas of Competence; philosophy courses that contribute to the major; departmental graduate courses; online courses; interdisciplinary courses that contribute to other departmental programs.
