Job description

Georgia State University (GSU) invites qualified nominations and applications for two tenured or tenure-track positions to support the development of research in the area of Artificial Intelligence Augmented Systems to begin Fall 2020. Successful applicants will have a faculty appointment either in the J. Mack Robinson College of Business or in the College of Arts & Sciences. Appointments in two or more academic departments are possible. One position will provide leadership for the program and is open rank, but we expect to hire at the level of associate or full professor. A second position is targeted toward a junior faculty member where rank is open, but we expect to hire at the level of a senior assistant or associate professor. At most one of these positions would have primary appointment in the Department of Philosophy.

GSU, the largest university in the state of Georgia, is an enterprising R1 university located in the heart of Atlanta. Nationally recognized as a leader using innovation to drive student success and research growth, GSU provides its world-class faculty and more than 52,000 students unique research, teaching, and learning opportunities. GSU enrolls and graduates one of the most diverse student bodies in the nation and is committed to serving this student body and advancing innovative research by building a diverse faculty.

THE PROGRAM

The mission of the Artificial Intelligence Augmented Systems Program is to understand how artificial intelligence (AI) functions in relation to other technologies and to humans in the context of evolving organizational and institutional frameworks across different application domains. Faculty in the university’s Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, Psychology, and Philosophy departments have come together to launch interdisciplinary research designed to leverage existing core strengths in information systems and machine learning on the one hand, and in the cognitive processes that support decision making, including ethical considerations, on the other hand. GSU offers an exciting and active interdisciplinary community of scholars in these areas, including those affiliated with the Blumenfeld Center for Ethics, the Center for Research in Information Security and Privacy, Center for Translational Research in Neuroimaging and Data Science (TReNDS), and the Center for Advanced Brain Imaging.  For more information about the GSU Department of Philosophy, see http://philosophy.gsu.edu.

THE POSITIONS

The Artificial Intelligence Augmented Systems Program is funded by the university’s Next Generation Faculty Program—a multi-year strategic hiring initiative designed to build core research capabilities by adding faculty excellence in interdisciplinary and innovative research areas. The award represents the university’s commitment to this area of inquiry and is designed to create a truly international center of excellence.

Successful senior faculty candidates will demonstrate a capability and eagerness to take a leadership role in the program, to attract additional world-class scholars and researchers, to establish and nurture relationships across stakeholders both internal and external to the university, and to attract research funding to grow and position the program for success. Successful junior faculty candidates will demonstrate research skills and interests that complement those of an interdisciplinary set of colleagues interested in the coordinated study of AI at its most fundamental levels. All candidates must demonstrate a commitment to teaching, research, and mentorship in a diverse environment. When possible, candidates should provide evidence of teaching effectiveness with diverse and/or first-generation undergraduate or graduate students.

Candidates should have expertise in one or more of the following areas: (1) Ethical and/or legal theory as applied to emerging AI technologies; (2) Design and governance of AI Augmented Systems and/or emerging AI technologies; (3) AI-human interactions in decision-making, business processes, and outcomes; (4) Cognitive science of human/AI decision-making. Successful candidates will have research and teaching interests that cross traditional disciplinary boundaries. Candidates must have a demonstrated record of successful research and teaching and hold a Ph.D in a relevant field (e.g., computer information systems, computer science, philosophy, psychology, etc.). Both positions are open rank. Salary, course load, and additional research support are competitive and will be based on experience and level of appointment. Anticipated start date is Fall 2020.
